What you need to know to Secure Your Future -- Attend Free Financial Awareness and Assistance Expo

Maryland residents need to know how to manage their finances, what to do in case of a foreclosure and how to prepare for natural disasters. A foreclosure means you could lose your home. According to a report released by the Mortgage Bankers Association, a record 1.2 million homes were in foreclosure during the last three months of 2008. Receiving notice that your house is about to be foreclosed upon is one of the most traumatic events you can experience.

Assistance is available to all Marylanders on May 2, 2009 at the free "Securing You Future Expo" at the University of Maryland Samuel Riggs Alumni Center, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, where volunteer lawyers from the Maryland State Bar Association's (MSBA) Leadership Academy will equip attendees with the tools necessary to address issues such as: foreclosure, debt management and household budgeting, emergency preparedness and disaster relief. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, being prepared for a natural disaster can reduce your fear, anxiety, and losses, so the need to prepare for natural disasters is real.

Securing your Future Expo has something for everyone. At the Expo, attendees will attend free workshops on these important issues presented by a variety of partners, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community service providers. Participants will learn how to prevent or mitigate losses in the event of looming debt, foreclosure, and/or natural disasters and gain access to information and resources dedicated to financial literacy and emergency preparedness.

As part of the Expo, volunteer attorneys from the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland will present a Foreclosure Solutions Workshop, where participants can get free one-on-one legal advice about their individual problems by lawyers who are trained in foreclosure prevention. Only those who are interested in their services must pre-register and pre-registration guarantees a Free Legal Consultation. To pre-register call: 301-834-3208. Also, attendees interested in meeting with these attorneys should bring all paperwork related to current and former mortgages including loan application, settlement paperwork, and lender statements, all foreclosure notices and monthly household budget.

MSBA's Leadership Academy is a committee providing a 12 month program designed to assist lawyers to become better leaders by participating in specialized training and developing and implementing a public service project.
