Barry Chasen, a past chair of the Maryland State Bar Section on Negligence, Insurance and Workers' Compensation, and a highly regarded philanthropist, has been selected by the National Capital Area Chapter of American ORT to receive the ORT Community Achievement Award, which is given to people who make a unique contribution to the greater community and establish a new direction for society.

Joseph M. Quirk, a solo practitioner from Rockville, was awarded the 2005 John Carroll Society Pro Bono Legal Service Award for outstanding contribution to the Archdiocesan Legal Network of Catholic Charities, a pro bono program serving the legal needs of the poor and homeless.

The American Judicature Society has presented its 2005 Justice Award to Benjamin R. Civiletti, a former United States Attorney General and chairman of the law firm Venable LLP, for his significant contributions to improving the administration of justice nationally.

Jan I. Berlage, an associate in the Litigation Department of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, was appointed chair of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division's Ethics and Professionalism Committee.

Nancy Morrison O'Connor, partner in Bracewell & Giuliani LLP's Washington, D.C.'s office, has been named the new chair of the Montgomery County Commission on Human Rights.

Active Maryland State Bar member Leo J. Jordan was awarded arbitrator of the year by the New York City Small Claims Court Arbitrators Association. Jordan serves as an arbitrator several times a week in Lower Manhattan, Mid-Town and Harlem Community Courts.

James K. Archibald and Kevin L. Shepherd, both partners with Venable LLP, were awarded with 2005 Leadership in Law accolades by The Daily Record. Archibald is a veteran Maryland lawyer who has extensive first-chair experience, while Shepherd is the co-chair of Venable's Real Estate Group.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers inducted their 2005-06 president, Cheryl Lynn Hepfer, an attorney from Montgomery and Princess George's Counties.

Former Senior Vice President of Constellation Energy Group Kathleen Chagnon has joined Saul Ewing LLP as a partner in its Business Department, while Jeffery N. Zann, formerly with the WebMD Corporation as an Assistant General Counsel, has been named an associate in the same department.

The Women Empowered Against Violence (WEAVE) has elected Kerri L. Ruttenberg, an associate with the Cozen O'Connor law firm, as the co-chair of the board of directors.

The American College of Trial Lawyers have inducted M. Hamilton Whitman, Jr., a principal with the Ober Kaler law firm, as a Fellow for his high standards of ethical conduct, professionalism and civility.

The Maryland Negotiations Service presented the Education Group of Hodes, Ulman, Pessin & Katz, P.A., with the Distinguished Service Award for their contributions to the Maryland Public School System.

Raymond Daniel Burke, a prestigious construction lawyer and litigator of 25-years with Freishtat, Burke, Mullen & Dubnow, LLC, is now a principal at Ober Kaler.
