Demystifying AI in the Law: Addressing Concerns and Embracing Opportunities

How can lawyers effectively harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline legal processes and enhance research capabilities, while ensuring robust safeguards are in place to mitigate ethical and regulatory risks? MSBA is proud to host a panel of experts to discuss these issues at a Roundtable Discussion, "Demystifying AI in Law: Addressing Concerns and Embracing Opportunities," on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 12:30 pm, during the 2024 MSBA Legal Summit in Ocean City. Lunch will be served.

Matthew Kohel, partner at Saul Ewing LLP and chair of MSBA’s recently formed AI Task Force, is an AI expert especially as related to intellectual property, data privacy, and corporate policies on the use and management of artificial intelligence in the workplace. Matthew will lead the panel. He frequently represents clients in commercial litigation, intellectual property matters and data privacy issues.

The MSBA is honored to also have Senator Katie Fry Hester join the panel. Senator Hester has been a member of the Maryland Senate since January 2019. She is currently serving as the Deputy Majority Whip and Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Biotechnology. Senator Hester will discuss her recent efforts in the Maryland legislature to pass laws addressing concerns relating to AI, including deepfakes and revenge porn.

Damien Riehl, lawyer and technologist with experience in complex litigation, digital forensics and software development will also join the panel. At vLex Group, Damien helps lead the design, development, and expansion of various products, integrating AI-backed technologies (e.g., GPT) into a dataset to improve legal workflows.

Chris Stevens, an attorney at CareFirst BCBS in Washington, D.C., will also join the panel. Chris advises on matters related to AI use within CareFirst and helped draft CareFirst’s corporate policy regarding employees’ use of LLMs and other AI tools.

Finally, rounding out the group is the MSBA’s own Legal Content Editor, Pamela Langham. Pamela, a former General Counsel for a Florida public university has been a lawyer for 33 years and formerly represented Fortune 50 and 500 companies in litigation including advising and drafting corporate policies and best practices for management and governance. She frequently writes on AI and its impact on the practice of law.

The expert AI panelists will provide a comprehensive overview of the integration of AI in legal practices. The panel will highlight how AI can assist lawyers by automating routine tasks and enhancing research capabilities. The discussion will include AI tools and resources available for lawyers. Best practices and ethical considerations will be addressed, underscoring the importance of maintaining client confidentiality, ensuring the accuracy of AI-generated information, and the lawyer’s responsibility in supervising AI tools to uphold ethical standards. The panelists will also delve into the emerging AI legal landscape including deepfakes and discuss the regulatory challenges and opportunities AI presents. The key points and insights shared aim to equip lawyers with the knowledge to effectively leverage AI in their practice while adhering to ethical guidelines.
