Dealing with Vicarious Trauma - Strategies for Lawyers

Dealing with Vicarious Trauma - Strategies for Lawyers

Legal Summit Series On-Demand
In the current workplace with continued change and uncertainty, patience is often in short supply, emotions seem to run higher, fuses seem to be shorter, and meaningful connection is often challenging. Lawyers step into this environment with empathy and compassion, holding space for others, taking in their emotions, their stories, and their trauma. We as legal professionals give so much of ourselves to support others dealing with conflict, trauma, and change in the pursuit of encouraging them to shine. Yet, we are often the last to recognize the impact this has on us. This session will explain how vicarious trauma impacts the legal profession as a whole, and specifically those of us whose job it is to support those needing help. We will discuss the symptoms of vicarious trauma, explain techniques for building reserves that buffer negative impacts, and explore strategies to help create a culture that allows you to bring out the best in people and organizations despite the impact Vicarious Trauma might have. Focusing on practical short interactions, attendees will learn strategies and techniques for building reserves in dealing with trauma from both an individual and organizational perspective.
